Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between proofreading and copyediting?

Think of proofreading as looking as a smudge sample on a microscope slide with your bare eyes. You can see where the edges of the sample are; you can even see discrepancies in color and shape, but that's it. Proofreading analyzes a manuscript at the macro level, searching for mistakes such as typos, formatting errors, spelling mistakes, and incorrect punctuation.

In this analogy then, copyediting becomes the microscope, scrutinizing the finer details of the sample at a micro level. While copyediting still corrects for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, it focuses on syntax, fluency, and structure. The level of examination is far more precise. Copyediting catches errors that English speakers often don't realize exist; it provides clarity, conciseness, and depth.
Do you print books?

No, Emerging Ink Solutions is not a press. It is a comprehensive editing service that offers personalized editing, formatting, and book cover design. While Emerging Ink Solutions does not print, it can prepare authors' works for printing as long as the author has access to a printing press' parameters and requirements.
Why don't you post your rates?

Every project is different. Manuscripts vary in length, detail, and subject. A non-fiction book of 60,000 words will price differently than a fiction one because it usually includes special sections and formatting such as bibliographies, citations, etc.

Rates are also dependent upon the services independent authors request. Developmental editing is far more time-consuming and tedious work and thus is associated with a higher price tag than general proofreading.
Do you offer marketing or promotional services?

No, Emerging Ink Solutions focuses solely on preparing books for publication. It is the author's responsibility to promote his/her book.
When you're done editing my book, will it be perfect?

No, perfection is rarely, if ever, achievable. It was Voltaire who said, "The best is the enemy of the good." In other words, don't let perfect be the enemy of good. A professional copyeditor or proofreader will catch 80-90% of mistakes within a manuscript. Emerging Ink Solutions knows that perfection is not attainable, but because your book is our book, we're going to get as close as we can to it!
